Editor's Note** This is a new feature on Football.com where analysts and self proclaimed fantasy experts Jim Derwin (Social Derwinism, aka Social D) and Jeremiah Sarkett (The Shark) go back and forth discussing their fantasy strategies each week. For Week 2, Social D and The Shark actually go head to head. Let's see what they have to say... Alright J, you are 1-0 thanks to an offensive explosion from Tony Romo and a late score by Anquan Boldin. I'm 0-1 thanks to the just plain offensive peformance of Stephen Jackson and Alex Smith.
Week 1 is done and it's time to see who is for real. Not just us fantasy leaguers but the folks that actually strap a helmet on ya know?
Case in point, your starting QB Tony Romo. Do you think what he did against the Giants was a result of a superior passing attack or just a horrible Giants secondary? I'm thinking it's the latter. But I think he'll have a decent day against the Dolphins in sunny Miami. How about Stephen Jackson? He fumbled twice all last season and he fumbled twice last week. There's no way he repeats that JV crap again is there?
-Social D --------------------------------------------------------------- Ok Jimbo, let's get it on. First off, this is going to be a classic, weekly event, you and I talking about the staff league, the various matchup and moves that will be going on. But more importantly, I looking forward to publishing our dominate perspectives so our viewers can get to know us more but hopefully benefit from our vast amount of fantasy football knowledge and keen understanding of the weekly NFL matchups and how they affect your lineup. Plus, some league owners like, 'cough, cough' should really start reading our take each Friday/Saturday so they can better manage their own squads and be competitive.
Ok, getting to your email from yesterday. Interesting point about Romo but really, there are a handful (or more from watching ALL of the games Sunday) of defensive teams that are worse than the Giants and some of the plays that Romo made were terrific. He used his mobility to really spread the Giants thin on the outside and then picked them apart. I did see some secondary problems for the Giants but hey, give the RockStar some credit, the dude nabbed me 48 points.
This week will be much different going against what is arguably one of the league's best defenses. Miami is going to really limit the run game for Dallas or attempt to and this is why Romo won't have a monster day. He'll still give me 18 plus. Romo got a ton of yards on the Dallas play action plays. You know how DaBoys work, run, run to set up the pass, pass...
I am more concerned Larry Johnson squaring off against the sick Bears defense. They shut down L.T. last week and my gut is telling me that a much worse Kansas City offensive line and offense in general will not fair much better. Tell me this though Social, how is Barber going to be productive for you when Zach Thomas and Co. are stuff the run game. This is why Romo gets his for me- Dallas will be passing a bit more this week buddy!
I do like Steven Jackson to rebound this week against the 49ers but with Orlando Pace gone for the year, his numbers will be looking a little different, I'd be a bit worried there JIMBO. I don't want to talk too much crap to you but get real, what is Laveranues going to give you against Baltimore, especially with his boy Chad out probably. Not so fast here, you may be 0-2, just like my crew Michigan, ya feel me?
- The Shark -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yo Shark,
0-2 like Michigan... If only style points counted.
I think you're right on about Romo against Miami. 18 points is not out of the question at all. As for starting Barber, everyone knows he is the Cowboys' goaline back. Miami will be very concerned with T.O. given his monster Week 1, which should open things up for the run game. Even with Miami's stout defense, I see Barber getting in the end zone once or twice. Just look at Clinton Portis' production last week. He's splitting carries with Ladell Betts, and still got 15 points. You can't ask for much more out of your #2 or flex RB.
I see Stephen Jackson getting back on track as well. I'm not too worried about Pace going out. While that might hurt Jackson's YPC, he'll still get touches on screen passes and will put up big numbers against the Niners' lame defense. If I were you, I'd be sweatin with starting LJ against Da Bears. If not for LDT's halfback pass TD to Gates, he would've had a pretty disappointing day for a #1 overall fantasy pick. LJ went #3 or #4 in most drafts, and he doesn't have the throwing ability or the O-Line LDT is lucky to have. You might want to consider Deuce McCallister. After his minimal production against the Colts and even the Bears last year, I think Sean Payton is starting to realize he can still run people over and move the chains, rather than trying to finesse defenses with Bush.
I like your thinking about Laverneus, but I don't care who the Jets have at QB. Coles is their offensive team leader and is always the #1 option. How much worse could Kellen Clemens be than Pennington anyway? Plus, I think the Bengals proved that once Ray Lewis is out of the game, you can score on this Ravens D. Chad Johnson had a great day, if you recall.
To answer your question, do I feel you? No, but I can definitely smell your Drakkar Noir even with you in Arizona Big Daddy!
-Social D --------------------------------------------------------------- Social D,
Good point about Portis and Betts- they did have over 100 yards together and Portis had that big TD, mmmhhh.
NO way though brotha on Pace's injury not affecting SJackson- Pace is arguably the best tackle in the league and Jackson can take screen passes all day but when it comes down to it, how far is he going to run without any significant holes or consistent bodies to run behind. I'd be a bit more worried but I understand that you're in denial.
Yea, LJ may be pulled in favor of APete or Deuce... I just see the Bears as way to good right now and the Chiefs are not any where close to where they were last year. Who knows, LJ could get a TD and 70 though for 13 plus points. APete is going against the Lions and something is telling me he'll have a monster day- I know the Lions too well and saw how they had issues with LJordan last week.
Dude, come on though with Coles and the Jets. Just watch, Clemens has no clue and no rapport with Coles. McAlister will shut him down and Lewis is not hurt, he'll be patrolling the middle inflicting pain on every Jet that he can... Scary matchup for you here Jimbo, denial once again! Kellen Clemens and Laverneus Coles are not Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson, just face it, they aren't.
It's going to be a close one this week that is for sure- it comes down to our last minute adjustments I think and who will read the weekly matchups better... I like my matchups right now compared to yours- you're facing some really tough defenses in Miami and Baltimore, you know this but it goes back to your clouded vision due to mass denial. Seek help before it is too late Jimmy Boy!
The Shark ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shark,
Glad you saw my infinite wisdom regarding Marion Barber. The Miami D is talented, but they are getting old. There will be plenty of holes for Barber, and Jones for that matter, to run through.
I said Pace going out would affect Stephen Jackson's YPC (yards per carry), but he will have plenty of touches and I'm not really scared of SF's defense. If AZ could run the ball effectively, the Rams should be just fine. You're the one in denial if you think the Niners' front seven are stopping a marquis back.
Sure LJ might get 13 points, but he's your #1 RB, and the #3 or 4 RB taken in leagues everywhere. I think #1 RBs should be giving you 16 points on a bad day. Based on his lack of production last week and facing an even tougher defense this week, I think Adrian Peterson and Deuce are your best bets. Peterson will have a great day. That was a solid pick up man. I really hate you for that.
OK OK, you've convinced me to bench Coles. I'm putting in Donte' Stallworth in his place. I think since Moss exploded last week, the Chargers will double team him and that should give Stallworth and Welker some opportunities to make big plays. You have some good receivers I have to beat out. Hines Ward and Stallworth will probably be my best shot.
Should be a close game Shark. Too bad you're in AZ and we can't trade shots for touchdowns. Then again, you'd be canned by 11am.
Evolve, Derwinism ------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim,
Last go around brotha. I think the Niners will get better play this week from their front four and you know Moore and Willis will be swarming, so not so fast with your boy SJackson. He's still is a tier-one back even with Pace out but his numbers will be down this year and against the Niners on Sunday. Jackson owners will be freaking out after two weeks. Veteran owners will not be as worried as Jackson will surely find his form.
L.J. is going to also struggle out of the gate this year bro- no camp time and the loss of Will Shield and Roaf is ... If he can net me 14 points against the Bears, I will be happy but right now, he may not even get the chance... APete may get the call here. I just don't like taking super stars out of the lineup, ever. That move ends up biting me and other fantasy owners in the ass more often than propelling us to victory.
I wonder about Moss again this week also- watch he'll come out with 10 for a buck fifty and a touchdown. But I wonder about Stallworth also bro- his hamstring is acting up again and this has been a lingering injury, we'll see about that move, could crush me, or really hurt you. I see the latter. Who else do you have at WR? Are you a little slim over there bro, where is your depth at wide receiver? Oh, wait, trying not to talk too much smack, that's right.
Oh, I am going to throw this in lastly, what are you going to do with the Edge? Dude, the front seven in Seattle is solid bro and I think San Fran let Arizona run as they said look, let's take away their receivers and not worry about the run... Bro, the Cards have crushed me for years, I'm holding my breath for you on this one also.
Honestly though Jim, I think this is a destined team that I have here bro... Championship!
