The Best of The Big XII

The Best of The Big XII
It wouldn't matter if one team was winless...or even if they both were – when Texas and Oklahoma take the field, it seems the outcome could be determined by a coin toss. A week ago, both teams were top 10, undefeated Big XII powers, and both fell like an intoxicated college freshman after their first Friday night on campus. Texas to Kansas State, and Oklahoma to Colorado. No, that can't be right, two teams from the Big XII North? The stepchild division of the conference?

Both teams experienced wake up calls last weekend. Wake up calls...as in, “Wake up, you're not as good as people said you were!” Not to toot my own horn, but toot toot – I've said it all along. These teams are loaded with offensive athletic talent, yet when it comes to their young, talented quarterbacks, both Sam Bradford of OU, and Colt McCoy of Texas need much improvement to completely refine their QB skills.

When you consider who both teams played during the first few weeks of the season, it seemed unfair that both Oklahoma and Texas were so highly touted. They simply hadn't earned it. Texas even seemed to be tested each week before pulling away on the scoreboard by game's end. Yet somehow, the geniuses of the Associated Press thought both schools deserved to live close to the top 5 for the first several weeks. Wrong! Kind of makes you wonder how many folks from the AP actually played sports, and especially how they can influence such well-respected college analysts like Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso – only the once almighty American dollar knows.

Bottom line, the Big XII North looks much stronger than the South, and for those that consider themselves college football fans, leave the Sooner and Longhorns fans to themselves. Oklahoma will win the game, due to the fact that Texas just isn't very good. Viewers may instead enjoy some Saturday afternoon activity and catch the late battle between the two Big XII teams that will compete for the North division crown: Missouri vs. Nebraska.

Mizzou is coming off a bye week, and Nebraska is coming off a win that was too close for comfort vs...wait, this can't be right – what's going on in this conference? Yes, vs. Iowa State. Perhaps the Huskers were looking a little bit beyond the Cyclones, to the upcoming battle in Columbia, MO, or perhaps Nebraska has more to prove to in the Big XII than Texas and Oklahoma.

The Missouri v. Nebraska game has become a fantastic rivalry over the past few years. The teams have split the last four contests – the home team using the 12th man to their victorious advantage. The victor of the 2007 contest will more than likely go on to win the North division and face (fill in the blank) _____________ for the Big XII title. (I'm going with Baylor...?)

How I see it

Missouri takes this one. Their talented offensive backfield anchored by QB Chase Daniel, and RB Tony Temple will enjoy several sustained drives as well as big play potential against the Nebraska defense. Just as Southern California did; just as...Iowa...State...did. Look for Missouri to be the next team from the Big XII to crack the top 10, and by actually winning a few games to get there.
