Bills Lose Monday Night Shocker The stage was set. Buffalo was finally back in primetime. The city’s first Monday Night Football game in 13 years created an electric atmosphere. Bills fans were rabid. The team was fired up. In the first 59 minutes and 58 seconds of the game, it seemed like the Bills were finally going to stick it to the franchise that caused them so much heartache in the early 90s.
Then, as if by some cruel twist of fate, the Buffalo Bills lost the game.
Anyone who watched this Monday night rollercoaster was treated to a wild, emotional battle that was as suspenseful as it was shocking.
Tony Romo threw two picks in his first two passing attempts. Two of his picks were returned for touchdowns in the first half. Romo finished the game with six total turnovers -- five INTs and one fumble -- but he ended up leading his team to an improbable finish.
Buffalo was getting it done with defense, special teams and a solid game from rookie QB Trent Edwards. Marshawn Lynch ran hard, but only amassed 66 yards on 20 carries. Buffalo’s defenders were jumping routes and capitalizing on Romo’s poor decisions. Terrance McGee scored a 103-yard kick off return touchdown. Everything was clicking for the Bills, and when Edwards drove the team deep inside Dallas territory with about 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, the Bills were on the verge of locking down a victory.
After Edwards threw a pass that was tipped by DeMarcus Ware and intercepted by Terrance Newman, everything fell apart for the Bills.
The Bills actually added another interception after Edwards’ first pick, but their offense went three and out after the turnover. The Dallas Cowboys caught fire late and took advantage of Buffalo’s conservative play calling down the stretch.
Romo drove Dallas down the field in an impressively clutch last-minute performance. He found Patrick Crayton in the endzone with 20 seconds left in the game. Down two, Cowboys lined up for a two-point conversion, but Terrell Owens couldn’t hang on to the ball.
The Bills, it seemed, had dodged the bullet. But there was still 20 seconds left when the Cowboys lined up for the onside kick.
Rookie Kicker Nick Folk booted a beautiful onside kick that was recovered in Bills’ territory. Two short passes later, the Cowboys were in position for a game-winning field goal.
Folk drilled the game-winning 53-yard FG attempt, but Dick Jauron called a timeout at the last second. Folk lined up for a second attempt and promptly split the uprights again.
Buffalo’s home crowd was stunned. Fans could be seen wiping tears form their eyes and more than few Bills players were visibly rattled. A game that started with so much promise ended in absolute anguish for Buffalo.
With the miracle finish, the Cowboys moved to 5-0. They’ll host the New England Patriots next week in a battle of undefeated powerhouses.
