Carolina Defeats DeAngelo Hall and The Falcons

Carolina Defeats DeAngelo Hall and The Falcons

Just when it looked like the offense was clicking in Atlanta, three time Pro Bowl CB, DeAngelo Hall's temper kept giving Carolina more chances and eventually allowed them to win a close game 27-20.  The bright spot for the Falcons is they got a decent game out of Joey Harrington.  In his third start as a Falcon, Harrington threw for 361 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Not too shabby.  The running game was only able to muster out 87 yards against the strong Carolina front seven.  That would have been the difference in this one.

Right.  I could easily say this one came down to the Falcons not being able to run the ball, but ultimately, this one came down to character.  You would think players these days would know

a) If you talk smack, you better be able to back it up.

b) Don't ever talk smack to Steve Smith, he will make you pay.

c) Penalties are bad, but stupid penalties lose games.

DeAngelo Hall is a trash talker.  He's known for jawing at his opposing wide receivers, and it's generally kept to a competiive level.  Look at his past antics with the Bengals' Chad Johnson.  But jawing at Steve Smith, who is the best WR in the NFL, regardless what you say about Randy Moss, is a death wish.  He's either going to burn you or get in your head and make you do something stupid.  Today it was the latter and Hall lost his cool on three occasions which gave the Panthers 67 extra yards of field position.  In a close game like this one, you can't tell me that wasn't the difference.

The Falcons remain winless at 0-3 and match their worst start in franchise history. If today was any indication of where the offense stands, there is reason to be optimistic.  Falcons fans gave up on this season the second Vick plead guilty.  So if they can win a few games and remain competitive, then build off of this for next year, the Falcons can at least hold their heads up high.
