Cherilus receives probation Detroit Lions first-round pick Gosder Cherilus received one year of probation Thursday for his part in a bar brawl that left a patron seriously injured. Cherilus and DeJuan Tribble - former teammates at Boston College - were involved in a confrontation with a customer, Sean Maney, and an off duty Massachusetts state trooper in a Boston bar in July 2007. The patron suffered a broken neck and other injuries. The Boston College players were charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Tribble, a sixth-round pick of the San Diego Chargers, also was ordered to serve one year of probation. As part of the settlement, Cherilus, a 6-7, 314-pound offensive tackle, will be required to pay the victim $52,000 toward his medical expenses. Boston Municipal Court Judge Paul K. Leary ordered Cherilus and Tribble to stay away from the victim and ruled that the charges would be dismissed if the players obeyed the court order and stayed out of trouble during the length of their probation.
The victim, a 29-year-old software engineer, testified in a preliminary hearing that Cherilus grabbed him in a choke hold and dragged him across a dance floor before they crashed into a table. He also said that Cherilus and Tribble punched and kicked him while he was on the ground. Cherilus, who was taken by the Lions with the 17th overall pick in the draft, told the Boston Globe after the incident that he did not hurt Maney and was acting as a peacemaker. “The lesson I learned is not to try to break up any more fights,” Cherilus said last year. Maney has filed a civil suit against the players, the bar and the state trooper.
