Chiefs Welcome Back Allen, Rely on Rookie for Win

Chiefs Welcome Back Allen, Rely on Rookie for Win
Kansas City began their home opener looking as if they might put the house up for sale. An 0 – 3 season start was on the line, and the Minnesota Vikings would be no easy target for the Chiefs to break into the win column. Damon Huard looked typically Huardesque, able to dink and dunk to Tony Gonzalez, hand off to Larry Johnson and hit a few of his underrated receivers in stride. By no means did Huard look good, but he looked better – better than last week, better than the week before. How could he look worse?

Jared Allen returned to the line up after having his substance abuse suspension cut in half. Chiefs fans, as well as those who are fans of young, talented pass rushers, have to hope this young man can get his act together and lay off the sauce. It would be tragic to see such talent wasted on another issue of not knowing when to say when. On the field, however, Allen was a model citizen, looking and playing hungry, racking up 8 tackles with 2 QB sacks. He offered an immediate impact, and his presence was clearly an inspiration to the rest of the defensive unit, who kept Kansas City in the game while the offense continued to spit, sputter and make adjustments.

Although there were very few individual plays throughout this contest that would be considered impressive, the Chiefs stayed in the game with a couple of field goals and a timely 4th quarter drive that was capped of with a 16 yard touchdown catch by rookie Dwayne Bowe. Bowe, the Chiefs 1st round draft pick, has enjoyed considerable playing time over the past two weeks, due to an injury to the Chiefs #1 reciever, Eddie Kennison. Bowe's play to this point has been worthy of the 1st round pick, and has probably earned him the second starting spot opposite Kennison, once the fellow LSU alumni returns to the line up.

With a healthy receiving corp, Huard should have viable threats in the passing game. The speed of Kennison, combined with the size and strength of Bowe and Gonzalez, offers the Chiefs what could quite possibly be the most underrated group of pass catchers in the NFL. If they can improve in the passing game, Larry Johnson should be able to make his presence known once again, without having to be the Chiefs only big play threat.

The Chiefs defense will continue to create headaches for opponents with Jared Allen in the line up, and as they continue to improve, they will help keep the offense in a few games. It's unlikely that the Chiefs will pose much of a threat to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs, but they could certainly find themselves competing for a wild card spot once December rolls around.
