Dan the Man - Down Again Another year, another disappointment. What's in the water in Charlotte, NC? Or maybe it's that sinfully sweet, Southern style tea. Whatever the beverage of choice, since their Super Bowl appearance, the Carolina Panthers have struggled to begin, play through or finish a season without a key or season ending injury. Dan Morgan, Steve Smith, Dan Morgan, Steve Smith, Jake Delhomme and...Dan Morgan.
Poor Dan Morgan; it's impossible not to feel sympathy for the guy. One of the most gifted linebackers in the NFL, his name should be mentioned in any conversation with names like Brian Urlacher or Ray Lewis, yet it isn't – and it may not ever be. Morgan has spent more time in the NFL on the sidelines than he has on the field due to ongoing effects of multiple concussions. He was hoping to get back in the swing of things in 2007, and although he looked great in early season action, he began to struggle with pain, discomfort and poor performance in an ankle. Unfortunately, what was hopefully a strain or sprain has turned out to be an issue with his Achilles tendon.
Late yesterday, it was announced that the Panthers would place Morgan on IR, prematurely ending yet another of his NFL seasons. Surgery will be required to repair what is now known to be a partially torn Achilles. Just another frustration for Morgan, for the Panthers and for their fans. As past years have proven, it seems as if the team is destined for an 8-8 or 9-7 finish when playing at less than full strength, regardless of the Superman like efforts of Steve Smith.
It will be interesting to see what happens as the season progresses, and if the Panthers will continue to eat a loss with Morgan, or if he can make a heroic comeback. In the grand scheme of things, at 28 years old, Dan Morgan is still a young player. His current contract will keep him in Carolina through the 2010 season, but the potential effects of all his injuries have yet to be seen. Like so many things, in regards to this former Pro-Bowler, only time will tell.
