tt may not be quite time to start sounding the alarm, but concern is beginning to build regarding the state of the Eagles much heralded defense. Coach Andy Reid has long indicated his starting unit wasn't expected to perform together again beyond the third preseason game, a 27-13 loss to Pittsburgh, but more and more fans are questioning if many the players ever truly reported for duty this summer. Against the Steelers, the Eagles were pushed around at the line of scrimmage and looked particularly vulnerable against the screen pass, allowing Pittsburgh starter Ben Roethlisberger to complete 13 of 25 passes for 247 yards. Some are starting to point fingers at safety Sean Considine, clearly the most targeted victim during the Pittsburgh onslaught. Even defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has all but admitted he's like to see a bit more from Considine before the Birds open their season at Green Bay. All eyes will be on the third-year strong safety from Iowa when Philly hosts the Jets in its last match of the preseason. If Considine again falters, one option might be Quintin Mkell, whom coach Andy Reid hinted might be under consideration for a move from his free safety spot.
