Favre comeback rumors will not cease

It is now apparent that until the 2008 NFL season gets underway and Brett Favre is not suited up for the Green Bay Packers, we will continue to hear rumors that he is reconsidering his decision to retire, and could possibly return to the NFL. One has to believe that the reports of Favre returning are not coming directly from Favre himself and probably not from the Packers either. Just because Favre may still have an "itch" to play as the start of training camp draws closer does not necessarily mean he is coming back. Ask any star NFL player who has retired with some gas still left in the tank and they will admit that the urge to come back hit them hardest once training camps started.

The unfortunate part of rumors is that even when they are just rumors, there are sometimes negatives that accompany them. In the case of Favre, there is speculation that the Packers would not welcome the future Hall of Famer back with open arms since so much has been invested in Aaron Rodgers during the offseason. And that if Favre did return, he may be forced to request his release from the team or ask to be traded.

This makes it appear as though the the organization basically has moved on and no longer wants anything to do with one of the best to ever play the game.

If the Packers had trudged through an average season in 2007, maybe the idea that Favre returning to the team would hurt them in terms of being competitive would make sense. But that is hardly the case.

The Packers came within one game of going to the Super Bowl a year ago. And they did so with Brett Favre at quarterback.

And while the argument that it is time for Aaron Rodgers to take over the helm of the Packers offense after waiting in the wings for three years behind Favre may carry some weight, the bottom line in the NFL is to win a Super Bowl trophy.

And not many people will deny the fact that Brett Favre gives the Packers the best chance of doing so.

But again, it is all rumor and speculation at this point.

So maybe the best thing to do when it comes to talking about a Favre comeback is wait until the words come right from Brett Favre himself instead of anonymous sources.
