Giants' D Goes on Offensive

Giants' D Goes on Offensive

Somewhat lost in the hoopla of the New York Giants record-setting sack night against the Philadelphia Eagles are the most challenging conditions in which it came about.

On a bright, brisk, almost picturesque fall evening, the G-Men not only wrecked havoc during their 12-sack outing, they but did so against a unit that just a week before was being hailed and saluted for historical feats all of their own.

One week after Philly ran up a team record eight-touchdowns in their 56-21 thrashing of Detroit, Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka, Justin Tuck and Michael Strahan made the Eagles look as if they had never so much as spent an evening of training camp together in their 16-3 shellacking.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb never stood a chance, at least not after it was established that veteran linemen William Thomas would be unable to suit up. In his stead, lined up second-year man Winston Justice. And with that, the floodgates to McNabb opened.

Umenyiora led the charge with six sacks, breaking the record of 41/2 held by Pepper Johnson and falling just one short of the league-record held by former Kansas City linebacker Derrick Thomas. The few plays Umenyiora didn't make, Kiwanuka (three sacks) and Tuck (two) seemed to be on hand to clean up.

“We're now 2-2, we're giving ourselves a chance to be in the hunt,” said a beaming Tom Coughlin, who just two weeks before had stood at the same podium, dumbfounded to answer questions of just how his veteran unit had grown to become so incompetent. But on Sunday, Coughlin stood proud and spoke loudly.

And with that, all the hoopla the hoopla can begin anew.
