Giants Set to Get Serious

editor8  |Sep 20,2007

There's a buzz ward permeating all of Giants camp in these clearly trying days. “Serious,” coach Tom Coughlin touched upon it during his weekly press conference and Giants' players spoke of it, whenever they would speak that is, throughout all their various sitdowns.

“Hopefully it's a different mindset, better practice, better focus, those kinds of things, Coughlin said of the week following he team's 0-2 start. “We talked about it and they were more attentive and they were anxious.”

The winless Giants visit the the NFC co-leading Washington Redskins this week with their entire season arguably hanging in the balance. Indeed, the tension is so thick around Giants camp one would be hard pressed to find even one player willing to speak openly of it.

Defensive team leaders Michael Strahan and Antonio Pierce set the tone for much of the week by refusing to field questions regarding a unit hat has yielded a league-leading 80 points over the first two-weeks of the season and ranks dead last against the pass.

“We're already kind of behind the 8-ball," defensive end Justin Tuck told the New York Daily News in one of the rare player interviews granted this week. "To lose another game in the division would be a very tough hole to climb out of. So you can definitely sense the urgency in people."

But can an anxious player be an effective one? Certainly the Giants hope so and they will soon find out as they place they all but wager their season in the nation's capital this week.
