And to think, Michael Strahan came out of quasi retirement for this? Then again, maybe he didn't. Strahan and the Giants entire defensive unit has been missing in action over the season's first two weeks. In that span, the G-Men have yielded 80 points in blowout losses to the Cowboys and Packers, rendering it dead last in the league against the pass and 29th overall. Coach Tom Coughlin's defense has further embarrassed itself by becoming the team's first unit to allow so many points in back-to-back games in over 34 years. But then, what would you expect from a defense that has surrendered an average of 106 yards a quarter (864 total in two games), allowed seven touchdown passes and 35 fourth quarter points? Things don't figure to get much easier this week on the road against NFC East rival Washington. But somehow, Coughlin sees the silver-lining in it all. “The first and second down defense got better during the game,” said Coughlin, in recalling the Green Bay massacre. “They ran to our right side and we did do a better job there as the game progressed. I think there's continuous technical advancement in trying to get better in those areas.” Clearly, Coughlin is as confused as anyone by what has become of his once vaunted defense. For what it's worth, linebacker Kawika Mitchell has his own opinion. “I think its way better than what we've shown," he said. "But you have to have the effort, you have to have the attitude out there, and you have to be consistent with it. I think we're capable of way better than what we've put out there."
