Jamar Adams from Michigan is one of the more physical safeties in the upcoming draft. He is also a heady player judging by his comments to the media at the recent NFL Combine. What were your goals coming into this event? I just wanted to impress people with my speed and my ability to change directions. Is football like chess? In the mental aspect it is, but there is definitely a physical aspect that is only there in football and brings a new dimension. But the strategy, thinking ahead, recalling when you played them before, what moves you like to go to, what opening you like to go to, is like chess. So they are similar. Do you still play chess? Yeah, I do, I still play a lot. One or two games every week. Guys on my team. I don't play for money. Are you a grandmaster? No. Definitely not a grandmaster. Why did you intercept so many balls in high school? I was deep. We had a good scheme. I had really good ball skills. I played receiver so I didn't drop anything. In college I had 14 pass breakups this past season, and probably nine of them were dropped interceptions. In high school, it was repetition. I was a receiver so it was natural to me. You go to college and you don't catch the ball as much. You work on drills. So I lost that skill. Who is the best quarterback you faced? I think Chad (Henne) is the best one I faced. He had the arm strength to make all the throws so you could never cheat him. Why did Michigan struggle with the spread offense so early in the season? The spread puts a lot of pressure on players to make tackles and early in the season that's something that teams struggle with. In the open field, we had to be better tacklers. And that is what the season showed, as the season progressed we played better teams well because we became a better tackling team. Including Florida in the last game. What did you do to get ready for this event? Right after the season, I flew down to Naples, Florida to start training at Velocity. What do feel like my biggest strengths are? I feel like I am a pretty athletic guy. Do you still talk to Pierre Woods with the Patriots? Yeah, Pierre is a great guy. The best thing about Pierre is he is a genuine guy, a Michigan guy, he always cares about Michigan and the former players. I like to talk to Pierre, see how he is doing, get a feel on how the NFL is treating him. I talk to him maybe once a month, not too much, he has a lot of things to take care of. What is the best advice he has given you? Not to worry about where you get drafted at. If you get your foot in the door, take full advantage of. Be persistent and keep working hard. Have you talked to the Patriots? Yeah, I did. At the Senior Bowl. The best thing I like about the Patriots is they talk strategy and that is what I like to talk about so that was a good meeting.
