Joey Porter's Knee Surgery Successful Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter underwent arthroscopic knee surgery August 7th. Prominent orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews performed the operation in Birmingham, AL. Porter is expected to make a full recovery, likely missing only two preseason games. This is the third time in two years that Porter has had this type of procedure.
The Miami Dolphins signed Porter to a five-year deal worth $32 million, $20 million of which is guaranteed in March 2007. During his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Porter was very productive. In eight seasons, Porter accumulated 60 sacks and made three Pro Bowls. Originally a third round draft pick in 1999, Porter has proven to be durable. He has missed only six games in his career.
The expectation is that Porter will continue his stellar play in Miami. He joins Pro Bowl defenders Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas as the leaders of the defense. Porter brings a nastiness to the team that has been lacking in the past. Sports Illustrated named Porter the "Most Feared Man in the NFL" in 2006. Donnie Spragan will fill in for Porter while he recoups. Spragan has seen plenty of game action the last few seasons. Porter will definitely be on the field opening day when the Dolphins visit the Washington Redskins on September 9th.
