Kansas City: Who's The Chief? Who will it be in Kansas City? It's probably going to be Brodie Croyle...or Damon Huard – Yes, it will probably be the veteran Huard...but Croyle has looked very good in training camp and pre-season...except for that one throw, what was that? (This look into the mind of a Kansas City Chiefs fan was brought to you independently from my own stellar imagination.) It's not an easy decision for head coach Herm Edwards, because he's clearly going to be coaching...to win the game! When it comes down to X's and O's, both QB's have had good training camps, and it's looking like pre-season will be more a quarterback pageant than it will be the announcement of the Chiefs starter. The biggest questions to consider: When is it time to focus on the future, and when do you settle for game management? With Coach Edwards, there is no “play for the future.” The man plays for the present and is a preacher of the “one game at a time” philosophy. It's what keeps him gainfully employed, and what has gotten him to the playoffs for multiple seasons. This year's season goal is clearly no different for Edwards, so he must chose the gent that is poised to give the Chiefs the best chance to win. In 2006, Damon Huard came into the line-up as a more than capable backup, and managed the Chiefs to victory in multiple contests. But what will he offer without Larry Johnson in the backfield. As it stands, LJ has still yet to strike a deal with the Chiefs, and Kansas City can't rely on his potential presence as being its usual offensive threat, and the leader of the Chiefs offense. What's that mean for the Chiefs? It's time to get Croyle under the center. Everyone seems to have Croyle under a microscope. Overall, he looked excellent in the Chiefs most recent pre-season game on Monday night. So what did the analysts focus on? The one bad toss from Croyle off of his back foot. One bad play? Everyone is still bowing down to #4 in Green Bay, correct? How's he looking in pre-season? Croyle made one key error, and it was mental error. If he steps into that same throw, he more than likely puts it on the back right marker – 2 touchdowns and a completely different argument. The young man is ready to play now; however, Coach Edwards won't likely go to Croyle, to Huard and then back to Croyle. It'll be Huard's job to lose, and when he does, that's that – Croyle's the man. I don't see it that way, but it does sound logical. The only thing that sounds more logical for the Chiefs: They need to sign Larry Johnson this week!
