Manning and Colts Gash Broncos The Denver Broncos had the Indianapolis Colts on the ropes, but could not deliver the knock out blow -- the defending champions stood strong and took Denver’s best shot.
The Colts are now 4-0 and were the superior team Sunday afternoon as they executed scoring drives on six of their last eight possessions in a 38-20 run away victory. The Colts have had the Broncos number of late, adding another disappointing chapter in the recent rivalry. Under Tony Dungy, the Colts have won five of seven games against Denver and have now won nine in a row dating back to last year.
Denver came out looking to run the ball and overpowered the Colts early. Travis Henry led the Broncos down the field on their first possession and Jason Elam put the Broncos up 3-0. The Broncos defense started strong and held Peyton Manning in check in the first quarter. Jay Cutler and the Denver offense found the end zone when Brandon Marshall scored on a seven yard slant route and Denver had an early 10-0 lead.
Manning & Co. would not be held down for long and the one-two punch of Manning and Josepth Addai proved to be too much for the Denver defense. Manning methodically led the Colts back from a 10-0 deficit and Joe Addai helped keep the ball away from Denver in the second half. Addai ran for 136 yards on 19 carries and had a big 14-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Manning finished 20-of-27 for 193 yards and had three touchdowns.
Cutler started the game, but was playing on an injured ankle from last week and it showed as the second year quarterback was pressing late in the game. Cutler was intercepted by Marlin Jackson that led to a Manning one-yard sneak to make the game 21-13 and the Colts never looked back. Cutler did add a touchdown run of his own, but Manning was in charge as he found Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne for second half touchdowns.
The Colts were a bruised bunch by the end of the game as Marvin Harrison (knee), Addai (knee), Bob Sanders (ribs) and Rob Morris (knee) all left the game and did not return. Henry for Denver sprained his ankle and was a non-factor in the second half, seeing limited action.
From My Note Pad
• Denver was rushing the ball at will -- Travis Henry had 131 yards on 26 carries while Selvin Young chipped in for 80 yards on 10 carries. Henry left the game briefly with a sprained ankle. • Denver could not get the passing game going without Javon Walker in the lineup. Denver finished with only 131 net passing yards. • Jay Cutler seemed to be bothered by his sprained ankle and finished the game 13-of-21 for 131 yards with a touchdown and interception but added a two-yard touchdown run. • Jason Elam scored eight points and passed Jan Stenerud for eighth on the career scoring list. • D.J. Williams had a terrific game with 11 tackles for Denver and Champ Bailey added nine. • The Denver Broncos were unable to get any pressure on Manning and finished the game with no interceptions and sacks. • Dallas Clark was a terror for Denver has he had six catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns. • Marlin Jackson continues his impressive play for Indy has he had six tackles and a big interception.
