New Applicants for the NCAA Top-Spot There were several great wins this weekend in the college ranks: Oregon, South Florida and South Carolina come to mind, but in regards to wins that were just obscenely impressive – there were two. Oklahoma University Oklahoma had no issues in boarding up the windows and bracing for the Hurricanes of Miami. After hopping out to an early lead, they never looked back, hitting the half century mark + 1. If Bob Stoops and the boys were looking to send a message to the college football world, they can consider Saturday a multi-faceted success. Although it's still early, the Sooners seem to get stronger with every snap. They have clearly staked claim to the top of the heap that is known as the Big XII, and should pop into the top 3 of this weeks national polls. How I see it. The Sooners are clearly the team to beat in the Big XII. Sam Bradford has prototypical quarterback size, and a complete set of skills to go with the physique. However, I wasn't busy watching the numbers accumulate, I was busy watching his eyes; Bradford still has a lot of work to do. Against the Hurricanes, he enjoyed some wonderful looks, but he's prone to staring down receivers. Against a better defense offering more efficient and threatening blitz schemes, Bradford could struggle. OU must improve in running the ball – they've shown glimpses of promise in the running game, but will need to rely on it to open up the field for Bradford if OU hopes to threaten for the top spot in the nation. Louisiana State University The Golden Band from Tiger Land offered a nice tribute to the Virginia Tech Hokies before the game, playing the VT alma mater. The LSU fans responded by offering their continued sympathy, respect and condolences to VT...for the three minute duration of the song. At that point, the tribute was over and within the blink of an eye, so was the game. It was obvious from the first snap that the Virginia Tech offense wouldn't stand a chance against the LSU defense, only scoring one touchdown through the four quarters – a touchdown that came on a questionable review of an on-field call. Regardless, the LSU offense ran right through a formidable Tech D, and threw up another 40+ for the second consecutive week. Thus far, their offensive and defensive weapons have produced a two game win total of 93 – 7. How I see it. I see Florida, Kentucky and Auburn as back to back to back foes in three weeks. If LSU can eliminate their mental errors – personal fouls worth 15 a pop – and push through those three tough weeks, Tiger fans should start looking for tickets to the BCS National Championship game. The Tigers still have room for improvement in the kicking game, and should have ample opportunity to do so next week against Middle Tennessee State, before Steve Spurrier and South Carolina make their trip to Baton Rouge.
