 News of the Day--Feb.19 The Baltimore Ravens announced that they have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Terrell Suggs. The move means Suggs has been offered a one-year deal worth more than $8 million, the average salary of the five highest paid linebackers in the NFL last season. The designation allows the Ravens to continue negotiations with Terrell. If another team signs an offer sheet with Suggs, Baltimore can match that, or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed defensive end Travis Kirschke to a two-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Kirschke was scheduled to be a free agent this year. He originally signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent on March 11, 2004. The San Francisco 49ers announced that Steelers Sign Defensive End Travis Kirschke To Two-Year Contract. Smith originally signed with the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent from the Washington Redskins in 2000. The New York Jets have signed free agent safety Artrell Hawkins. Hawkins last played with the Patriots in 2006. Hawkins spent six seasons with the Bengals (1998-2003), one season with the Panthers (2004) and two seasons with the Patriots (2005-06) before being released by New England on August 18, 2007. The Washington Redskins announce today that they have re-signed veteran Pro Bowl long snapper Ethan Albright. Terms of the deal are not disclosed.
