NFL Adds F.O.R.C.E. to New HD Instant Replays At the start of the 2007 preseason, the NFL introduced a new, suped-up version of instant replay. The improved replay system features a high-definition upgrade and the introduction of F.O.R.C.E. (Football Officiating Replay Challenge Expeditor) software.
The enhanced replay systems have been installed in 28 stadiums across the nation. Dallas, Indianapolis and New York are the only places that have yet to implement the new systems. These remaining three locations will receive upgrades when stadium renovations are complete.
Instant replay first appeared in the National Football League in 1986. In 1991, the NFL voted to get rid of the faulty replay system. As digital media technology advanced, the league re-embraced instant replay in 1999. In March 2007, NFL owners got together and made instant replay a permanent feature of the game.
Two basic takes exist on the replay issue. There are fans that think replays slow the pace of the game by creating unnecessary breaks in the action. Other football enthusiasts want the officiating to be as accurate as technologically possible. Whatever your position is on replays, having improved resolution and a speedier software setup certainly has it's advantages. Increased resolution will help referees make quicker decisions. A clearer picture will ensure that views of challenged plays are more accurate.
Still, there are some drawbacks to this HD thing. High-definition video can sometimes appear so detailed that the picture looks almost artificial. A chaotic and instinctive game like football doesn’t always need to be deconstructed in super high-def, ultra-slow-motion. There's something to be said about allowing the game to unfold in real, natural time.
Whatever your stance is on instant replay, replay is here to stay. If it's not going anywhere, the league might as well make the replay system as efficient and detailed as possible. With clear pictures and added F.O.R.C.E, replays should go by much smoother in 2007.
