NFL Should Suspend Belichick

NFL fans are possibly the most loyal sports fans in the world. They love the game and they love their teams. But ask many of them about Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots and "Spygate" and most have no problem telling you how fed up they are with the entire thing.

Unfortunately for commissioner Roger Goodell, how the illegal videoaping was handled, and the disciplinary action handed down by the league is part of what disgusts fans the most. And no one can blame them for that.

Goodell has done an excellent job cracking down on the off-the-field antics of players. He has sent a message loud and clear that the NFL will not tolerate inappropriate behavior by it's employees and that they will be held accountable for their actions. Tank Johnson and Pacman Jones are just two players who can attest to that fact. But sadly, the issue of accountability apparently ends with the players.

To put it bluntly, Bill Belichick cheated. He cheated and he lied. And he didn't even lie all that well. But he's gotten away with it.

When the whole Spygate thing broke, the Pats were fined, Belichick was fined and the team lost a first-round draft pick. Belichick should have been suspended as well, but he wasn't. If nothing else, he should be suspended for using such weak excuses for his actions and actually expecting people to believe him.

Let's face facts now. For more than a few years, many of us have heard the endless drone of what a genius Belichick is. So what was his excuse for videotaping opponents? The best Mr. Genius could come up with was, "I felt there was a gray area in the rule and I misinterpreted the rule." Now remember, this is Bill Belichick, the genius who built the Pats into the dynasty of the decade saying this.

And if any of you believed that, I have some brand new unused "New England Patriots Super Bowl XLII Champions" apparel on sale.

There was no misinterpretation of any rule and there was no "mistake" made as he would have you believe. Belichick has been in the NFL for years and he knew exactly what he was doing. He never gave a second thought to possibly being exposed for it because he made sure not to be directly involved in any way. And he did this for years. That is calculated and premeditated, not misinterpreted.

He has showed absolutely no remorse for doing so because he is Bill Belichick. He doesn't have to show remorse. He doesn't have to answer to anyone for his actions and he's made that fact crystal clear. He will do exactly what he wants to do and even if he gets caught, he will not answer for it because he is Bill Belichick.

His recent tirade about Matt Walsh during a CBS news interview only convinced more people that he has no remorse for his actions and that he somehow still believes people will buy his weak act because he is who he is. The problem is that now Belichick resorted to one of the oldest ploys employed by attorneys since the beginning of time, and no one bought it.

Belichick tore into Walsh in his interview the same way lawyers have been tearing into people in courtrooms for hundreds of years now. Apparently, the only defense Belichick has left is to trash Walsh in a weak attempt to ruin his credibilty so the football world will not take what he says as the truth.

Belichick tried his best to sell his anger over the whole situation, but it was just another calculated and premeditated move and easy to see through.

So now it's time the NFL and Roger Goodell hand down discipline to someone who obviously has no respect for the game, or anyone else but himself. Goodell has held more than a few players accountable for their actions, he should now make it clear to eveyone that coaches are not exempt either.

Goodell has already said he doesn't buy into Belichick's excuses. In a news conference last week, Goodell said, " I didn't accept Bill Belichick's explanation for what happened, and I still don't to this day." But he also said that he felt the action he took against Belichick was "appropriate and unprecedented."

Unfortunately, there are many people who disagree with the commissioner on that issue , myself being one of them.

Roger Goodell took it somewhat personally when Michael Vick lied about his role in a dog fighting ring. He should took take Belichick's lies even more personally considering the fact that the integrity of the game is involved.

Bill Belichick should be suspended from the NFL indefinitely. For multiple rule violations, NFL players are suspended indefinitely, Belichick should receive the same for knowingly violating the rules for eight years.
