Parcells Headed to Miami It’s official. The Tuna has landed in Miami. Legendary head coach Bill Parcells has agreed to a four-year contract to become executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins.
Parcells was on the verge of signing a contract with the Atlanta Falcons to take over their football operations but backed out the last minute. His decision to take the Dolphins job was predicated on Miami owner Wayne Huizenga’s assurance that he would not sell the franchise. Apparently, Parcells and Huizenga are golfing buddies and have a closer relationship than Parcells has with Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
This is turning out to be a great week for the Dolphins. The team is coming off their first victory of the season, a dramatic overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens. Miami avoided becoming the first team in league history to go 0-16. Parcells’ arrival doesn’t bode well for the future of first year head coach Cam Cameron.
Chances are, Parcells will want one of his guys to lead the Dolphins out of obscurity. Parcells is widely regarded as a great evaluator of talent. As a head coach, he won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants and led the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance. In each of his four coaching stops, Parcells has led his team to the playoffs.
Most recently, Parcells spent four years as coach of the Dallas Cowboys. His team made the playoffs twice but failed to win a game. Parcells is currently an analyst for ESPN and will remain so until after the Monday night game between the San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos.
The rebuilding effort in Miami will be a challenge. Miami will benefit from the fact that they will have the first selection in the upcoming draft. Parcells will be asked to engineer the Dolphins return to the postseason. Miami has not made the playoffs since 2001.
