Patriots Add Veteran CB Dante Wesley to the Secondary The New England Patriots acquired cornerback Dante Wesley from the Chicago Bears August 8th for an undisclosed draft choice. Originally a fourth round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2002, Wesley will add depth and experience to the New England secondary.
After four seasons in Carolina, Wesley signed with the Chicago Bears in March 2006. The majority of his impact came on special teams coverage. Due to the Bears boatload of talent at cornerback, Wesley was somewhat expendable. New England will gladly take him.
For his part, Wesley is excited about joining the Pats. "I feel like if they make it to the Super Bowl, they're always going to win. I’m here now, so hopefully we make it and have a chance to win," said Wesley.
Wesley has played in two Super Bowls but has yet to win a ring. His addition to the team comes at a good time. The New England secondary is missing Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel who is holding out for more money. In addition, veteran corner Chad Scott suffered a devastating knee injury and is lost for the season. As it stands now, Ellis Hobbs and Randall Gay will likely start.
Wesley should compete for playing time with fellow newcomer Tory James. Wesley figures to contribute in special teams coverage as well. The former standout from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff appears determined to make an impact this season.
