Player Spotlight; Felix Jones

Felix Jones is still getting a lot of attention and will likely be a first round pick despite technically not being a starter at Arkansas.

Strengths: Explosiveness

Weaknesses: Protecting the football

Statline: 2,424 yards over sophomore and junior seasons with on only 287 carries for an amazing 8.4 YPC average.

Technique: Runs a little upright and needs to protect the football but shows the speed and strength to take the ball between the tackles or around the edge.

Known Injuries:   Lingering thigh injury Jones had for parts of two seasons at Arkansas.

Combine / Workout Assessment: 4.47 40-yard dash with a 34.5 inch vertical leap. 4.19 in the 20-yard shuttle.

DJ Boyer's Analysis: Felix Jones is the mystery man among the top prospects at running back, mostly because Darrin McFadden is the man we see the most running the football at Arkansas. Jones sported an amazing 8.0 YPC average at Arkansas carrying the football and brings a ton of explosiveness in the return game to the field. Jones may be more of a “home run hitter” than McFadden as he accelerates faster through the hole and at the time of the handoff than McFadden. Shows respectable skills as a receiver and will catch almost anything thrown his way but does need to work on his route running skills and his consistency in this department. A willing blocker who like his running stands too upright and doesn’t properly utilize his lower body in pass protection. Can make an immediate impact in the return game at the next level and can do so on punts and kickoffs. Lingering injuries may be a concern especially with his very upright running style which exposes a lot of Jones’ body and makes him a candidate to take bigger hits and impact. Is so explosive, needs to show teams he can cut it as a feature back and not just a change-of-pace guy or in a running back by committee system.
