Player Spotlight; Leodis McKelvin

He could be the first cornerback off the board in April and he is from....Troy? If you think Troy isn’t a football school tell that to the Giants, it’s the school that produced their only Pro Bowler off a Championship team (Osi Umenyiora) or the Cowboys who used the 11th overall pick in 2005 on DeMarcus Ware.

Leodis McKelvin        Cornerback             Troy
Senior                  5-11                   185

*Strengths:* Footwork
*Weaknesses:* Tackling

*Statline:* 60 tackles with 2 interceptions as a senior. Had 7 career return touchdowns as a punt and kickoff return man at Troy.

*Technique:* Very little wasted energy as he uses superior footwork to make man-to-man coverage look easy.

*Known Injuries:* Played in 48 career games at Troy, a very durable player.

*Combine / Workout Assessment*: Had a private workout March 11th but has already shown he can run a 4.4 and may have the best instincts/closing speed combo in this draft.

*DJ Boyer's Analysis:* Leodis McKelvin has enjoyed a steady rise up the draft boards beginning the year as a 4th/5th round pick to most people and climbing from there. McKelvin has only 4 interceptions in his career at Troy but that is because quarterbacks just avoid throwing at him altogether or he just breaks the pass up. The team that takes McKelvin will have the added bonus of having what may be the best return man in the country. McKelvin found the end zone on seven occasions while returning the football at Troy. He turns and runs with wide receivers with ease and has the presence to make a play in space and close on the ball during short passes. McKelvin does not show the best tackling instincts and can be guilty of overrunning a play and getting into trouble. Will try to arm tackle in the open field too often and it will haunt him in the NFL if he doesn’t improve upon this technique. Should be selected during the first 20 picks of this draft and is one of the most Pro Ready defenders on the board at any position.
