Player Spotlight; Mike Jenkins Everyone will know the name Mike Jenkins before the 2008 Draft is over. Some consider Jenkins to be the top corner available but beings that he played at South Florida not everybody knows about him. Still raw in many aspects of his game and will be drafted more upon ability and upside more than anything. *Mike Jenkins, Cornerback, South Florida* Senior, 6-0, 200 *Strengths:* Footwork *Weaknesses:* Backpedal *Statline:* 41 tackles with 3 interceptions and 12 passes defensed as a senior. *Technique:* Still a very raw prospect who benefitted from having another top notch corner start opposite him. Could be the best of this class when all is said and done. *Known Injuries:* High ankle sprain as a freshman limited his effectiveness and had him playing nmore safety in that season. No major injuries at South Florida. *Combine / Workout Assessment:* Coming Soon. *DJ Boyer's Analysis:* Mike Jenkins flashes plenty of big play ability and he and fellow senior Trae Williams formed what in my mind was the best 1-2 cornerback duo in the country for 2007. Jenkins was a corner that could not be avoided and much of the success that South Florida has came in packages where they could stack the line of scrimmage and just let their incredible corners do the rest. Jenkins has above average speed and change of direction skills to go along with exceptional footwork and lateral movement. Tackling skills are average and his willingness to come in and help in run support has been questionable at times. Very active with his hands and shields the ball well from receivers. Times his jumps perfectly and does a good job at getting the ball at its highest point. Did have an incident as a senior where he was arrested and had a brief suspension because of a disorderly conduct charge. What saves Jenkins is his record is clean other than this incident and he was cooperative with police and school officials surrounding the incident. I think this means that this will not hurt the draft stock of Jenkins very much if at all but teams will be paying attention to this and asking questions. Jenkins is a solid first round pick who should be off the board somewhere in the 11-20 range.
