Raider Nation Resurrection

Raider Nation Resurrection
It's official, the Oakland Raiders of yesteryear are finished. Even beginning the 2007 season at 0 – 2, there is an optimism and energy that is rushing through Raider Nation that is fueled from the sideline. The Lane Kiffin era has begun, and the two losses have offered more exciting football to the loyal fans than they experienced in all of the past two seasons. Never mind the fact that the young head coach is sometimes difficult to decipher when in front of the press; he's speaking football in football – sans the proper English translation.

The young defensive unit, marked with veteran leadership, has continued to improve and look as if they might compete with anyone on any given Sunday. But it is the "work" of QB Josh McCown that has left many of the silver and black faces with furrowed brows. Furrowed brows that are impressed, unimpressed, surprised, disgusted...and mostly confused. Somehow, McCown has gotten the offense in a position to win the first two games of the season. How exactly is he doing this? Would the Silver and Black be 2 – 0 if Culpepper were taking the snaps? Regardless, if McCown is capable of improving, the Raiders are going to threaten a few opponents just as they did vs. Detroit and Denver. And if he isn't...well, one would have to expect to see Daunte Culpepper before the game is over vs. the Browns in week 3.

The signing of JaMarcus Russell has provided even more optimism in the land of Silver and Black, even after the unfortunate events surrounding his contract negotiation. It's awful to see a player with such potential putting their personal and professional trust in an agent, but the NFL is big business, and a big business deal needed to be made. Now that Russell is with the team, eyes will quickly gravitate toward the young talent, who hasn't even come close to realizing his own potential. He's got much to learn in transitioning from Saturday to Sunday ball, but if his past is any indicator for his present and future, he'll be “ready” to take a few real snaps before Fake-Santa shows up at your local mall. As if Raider fans weren't already confused as to why they haven't seen Daunte Culpepper in action. Within a few weeks, they'll be looking beyond Pepp to see what the future holds.

What about rookie running back, Michael Bush? He remains on the PUP list and will be re-evaluated around mid-season. Chances are, they'll continue to work him through rehab on IR for the remainder of the season as opposed to push him towards contact drills or suiting up for any “real” action. Raider fans (and those fans from Louisville who have kept a close eye on this phenom) will simply have to be patient as this young offensive unit won't enjoy their complete revelation until next year. The good thing about all of this for a Raiders fan? Patience is always available for $1.99/year. Checks can be made out to Al Davis.
