Rams Lockup Bulger with Six-Year Extension

At the start of training camp, the St. Louis Rams and quarterback Marc Bulger avoided a potential holdout and came to terms on a six-year contract extension.  Exact numbers haven’t been released, but Bulger, a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the most accurate passers in the NFL will be the highest paid player in the team’s seventy year history.  The deal moves the six-year veteran into the top echelon of quarterback salaries and shows the Rams’ commitment to a player that has a career completion percentage of 64.4%.  Coming off a career year, Bulger looked to cash in before having the opportunity to check the free agent market.  His 2006 numbers speak for themselves, 4,301 yards passing, 24 TDs and only 8 interceptions in 588 attempts.  With an abundance of offensive tools, Bulger has become an effective operator of the Rams’ offense under both former head coach Mike Martz’s pass heavy attack and new coach Scott Linehan’s more balanced offensive scheme.  The emergence of running back Steven Jackson takes even more of the pressure off Bulger to be the main source of the team’s production.

After backing up Kurt Warner in his rookie season, Bulger filled in when the former MVP went down to injury in 2002.  He led the team well for seven games that year and had a QB rating of 101.5.  In 2003 he took the reigns from the struggling Warner and never looked back.  As he has matured, the 30 year old Pittsburgh native started gaining recognition for his accuracy and his ability to lead the offense.  Stepping in to the “Greatest Show on Turf,” Bulger has had success in the regular season but has yet to break through to the next level.  In 2007, with a new contract and a balanced offense, the Rams could be poised to make a run into the territory that is the true measure of a QB’s greatness, the playoffs.
