Randy Moss Q & A

Randy Moss has been one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL for many years. In 2007, he broke the regular season record for touchdowns receptions in a single season. But Moss has insisted from the first day he signed with the Patriots that his goal was a championship ring. This coming Sunday, he'll get his chance at owning one. Moss addressed the media this week, read on to see his thoughts.

On Wes Welker's contribution to the offense and what he first thought of him

"When I first saw him, we were working out, and I saw his quickness, but I didn't know really how fast he was. Yesterday I was asked about who is the fastest and the quickest, and stuff like that. I knew what I could do outside as far as stretching the field with my speed, but I didn't pay much attention to what he can do in the slot. Once I saw him, I felt it could be something big because we can definitely play off one another and you've seen the results this year. He had one of his best years he's ever had, and that's the same as myself, so I think we complement each other very well."

On Giants wearing black because they want to bury the Patriots perfect season

"Yes, you are supposed to wear black to a funeral. I think there is a lot of hype to this game. We played them in the preseason and regular season so this will be the third time we've faced them. This is the last game of the year, so you are entitled to do and say what you want and the results will be Sunday after the game. We'll see who has black on after the game."

On offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel's age

"When I first got to Massachusetts, I flew in to take my physical and Josh picked me up at the airport. He told me he was the offensive coordinator and that he calls the plays, and he told me his age. I was kind of overwhelmed because we are in the same age bracket, and I really didn't know what to think to be honest with you. Being with the New England Patriots, I figured he must know something. After being here during mini camp and training camp and seeing how the offense was made and designed, I thought he was probably if not the best, one of the best offensive coordinators in the League when it comes to scheming, calling plays and making adjustments. Once I heard he might be up for a head coaching job I went to him and said, 'Dude, you didn't tell me what's going on.' I have a lot of respect for Josh and I don't think age plays a factor at all with coaches in the NFL. The good thing about it is he's young and his upside is very high. The bad side of it is that I don't know how long he'll be a Patriots' coach."

On how glad he is to be a Patriot and if he'd like to finish his career there

"I'm happy, and not really happy to get to the Super Bowl. Don't get me wrong, I am excited to be here. But, I think the overall atmosphere of the locker room, the guys, being able to come together and them embracing me because I've been through a lot is what makes me most happy. With all the talk about me coming into the season, what I really wanted to do was to come out and have a good year, and I didn't care too much about my statistics. I just really wanted to come out and have a good year. When things started taking off the way they did, it was hard for me to sit back and say that this is where I want to be and this is what I want to do. Everything was thrown at me at once, such as the offensive plays and dealing with the players and the organization. Everything was fast paced when the season started and I was taken by storm every day, each week. I'm still loving what I do and being here, being a New England Patriot, I think this is where I do want to be. Hopefully, we can work something out after this season is over. The sky is the limit. I really don't know if I'm going to be a New England Patriot, but to answer your question, I would love to retire a Patriot, yes."

On how he'd sum up Tom Brady and how Brady would sum up him

"Tom is very tough and demanding. He's a tough guy and quarterbacks are not supposed to be tough and he demands a lot from his team, especially the offense. When you have a guy like Tom leading your team, you are willing to do anything by all means necessary to make things happen. What he would say about me, I really don't know. I think he knows that I understand and care about the game of football."

On the Boston/New York sports rivalry

"That is one thing I haven't really paid attention to. Over the last couple of weeks with everything that has been said, with the trash talking and what happened the last game of the regular season, I think it has become a rivalry. I don't know anything that has happened in the past between the two teams. All I know is this season, what they've accomplished and what we've accomplished. We are coming to steal something away from them, and they are trying to do the same. We'll see on Sunday, the best team will win."

On if he's thinking about the chance to make history

"No, and the reason is because Coach Belichick doesn't let us get too ahead of ourselves. We prepare day to day and never look ahead. Once we are among our family and friends, there is conversation of course, but as a team in the locker room, on the practice field, or even on the game field, we get as far away from that as possible."

On if he thought he might be headed to Green Bay instead of the Patriots

"I think Brett Favre wanted to talk to me. I think I was tied up and unable to talk to him. Green Bay was in the picture, but things were told to me about maneuvering money around and making it a good fit. The Packers were really talking about the wrong things, and not the right things. When they started talking more about the wrong things, I just hung up the phone and didn't want to talk to them anymore. I thought at first it was something that could have worked, for the fact that Brett Favre was there, but I think as the conversations occurred throughout the day and the next day, I didn't really want to go to Green Bay."

On Plaxico Burress guaranteeing a win

"He's entitled to say anything, but the only thing about a prediction is that you have got to make it happen. I think the pressure is more on them now since they've guaranteed this victory. We're going to go out there and try to execute a game plan. We've prepared very hard for the last week and a half and we still have got a couple more days to get out there and tone some things up, but making a prediction that you are going to go out there and make it happen are very tough words to back up, so like I said, 'we'll see when the game clock is on zero on Sunday.'"

On what his perception was of the Patriots before joining the team

"By studying New England on Sunday, I watched how they executed it and I'm an offensive guy, I don't pay too much attention to defense, but the way they were moving the ball up and down the field, the plays they were calling, the routes they were running, and as a receiver I looked at everything on their offense. I just thought to myself I didn't know how I would get to New England, but I knew I wanted to be in a good situation where I could be with a good offense and a great group of guys and go out there and continue to play at a high level. When I became a Patriot, it was more of me getting to know the organization and its philosophy, and Mr. Kraft's philosophy and how he went about his job on a day to day basis. The more I talked to the guys, such as Mr. Kraft and Scott Pioli and Coach Belichick, it was 'wow, it's everything I thought it was and more.' They portray themselves on television as a better, special organization that carries themselves professionally on and off the field. When we went down to Marquise Hill's funeral in New Orleans, it was something that overwhelmed me because I knew this team was together and from that day forward I started believing and understanding who they really were."

On being shut down by San Diego and Jacksonville and how much he wants to put on a show

"To be honest with you, the last couple of weeks they've taken me out of the game and it's allowing other guys to do their thing. For this being my first Super Bowl, you'd expect me to say I want the ball or that I want to put up numbers, but at this point, I just want to win. I've had good games, I've had mediocre games, I've had bad games. So, this season has shown that anyone can go out there and make it happen, and being the last game of the season, nothing has gotten in my way from going out there and (doing my job) to make it happen. So, not getting any balls and a victory, I'm fine with that as long as I've got that ring at the end of the day."

On childhood friend Jason Williams winning ring in NBA and their success coming from small towns

"I haven't talked to Jason in a while. I think the last time I talked to him was the year they won the eastern conference finals against Detroit. In our childhood, it was just something we wanted to do - get to this level. We never ever talked about championships. Any championship I ever won, you think about it, but you never hardly talk about it. It just happens. What Jason and me have accomplished in our career professionally, being from West Virginia and a small town, is something I'm really proud of. Where I'm from, where we are from, guys don't make it out. I don't mean make it out such as jail or anything like that. I'm talking about sports athletes in that area trying to go Division I or Division II to make it to a professional level. Guys from where we are from don't make it, so to be able to say we've made it, that's a great accomplishment."

On what he meant when he said the Packers were talking about the wrong things

"They were just talking about their team concept and the wide receivers and Donald Driver. It was like they were telling me that they were going to somewhat take a chance on me but, 'if you do come here, these are the things you have to watch out, and be on your best behavior, and Donald Driver is the top receiver here, so don't come in and try to step on his toes,' and things like that. I didn't think that was right because my whole career I have been taken out of context sometimes, but at the end of the day all I wanted to do was win games. It's hard to win games in this League and I think that's why if we go ahead and do this thing the way it's supposed to be done on Sunday, that's a historical moment. I didn't really feel they wanted me. I felt that Brett Favre wanted me, but I didn't really feel the Packers wanted me."
