Ravens Looking Sharp

Jim Derwin  |Aug 18,2007

After witnessing the complete dismantling of the Philadelphia Eagles in their first pre-season game, players, coaches and fans are getting excited about the 2007-08 Ravens.  Granted the Eagles were playing without a few key starters, but starters only play a handful of plays in the pre-season.  Blaming any kind of poor showing in the pre-season to injuries is just plain stupid.  On the other hand, when your roster plays well from top to bottom, you can gloat all you want.  This, luckily, is a Brian Billick specialty.

Of course the Ravens’ defense was on point.  They didn’t give up one touchdown and made the Philly quarterbacks rush a lot of decisions.  The big surprise of the game was how efficient and effective the Ravens’ offense was.  Steve McNair went 6/8 for 73 yards and easily drove the offense 93 yards for a score on the opening possession.  Drew Olson also looked sharp going 7/9 for 84 yards and a score.  Kyle Boller and Troy Smith, however, were the lone black marks at the QB spot.  Corey Ross and Willis McGahee both averaged at least 5 yards per carry which is a big time improvement from last year.

My assessment is if the defense can pick up where it left off last year and the offense can finally put points on the board and control the clock, like they did against the Eagles, the Ravens may slip into the Super Bowl after all.
