Sean Taylor Dies at Age 24
A day after a home intruder shot him, Sean Taylor passed away. The 24-year-old Washington Redskin safety was one of the hardest hitters in the league. A 2006 Pro-Bowler, Taylor was just entering his prime. Although he was battling through a knee injury this season, Taylor shares the lead for the most interceptions in the NFC (5). Fans loved him. Teammates too. Now he's dead at the age of 24.

Taylor was the fifth pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He was an All-American at the University of Miami. Taylor led the Washington Redskins in tackles in 2006. Through nine games this season, he had more interceptions than any other year in his career.

On Monday morning, someone entered Taylor's home. The intruder made some noise, Taylor grabbed his bedside machete and the intruder fired two shots. The first shot missed and the second shot hit Taylor in the upper leg/groin region. The shot damaged an artery and Taylor lost a lot of blood. Taylor's one-year old daughter and girlfriend were not injured in the attack. Taylor was airlifted to the hospital. He never regained consciousness.

Police are still investigating the incident, but it's clear that this was no random act of violence. Taylor's home was broken into about a week ago. According to police reports, someone entered Taylor's home through a pried-open window, rummaged through some drawers and left a knife on his bed. Taylor missed a team meeting after the first home invasion incident. Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs excused Taylor and let him attend to his business.

"This is not just a member of the Washington Redskins," teammate Pierson Prioleau told reporters. "We're talking about a dad, a brother, a friend of ours, and that's where we're at with this right now."

This is a tragic day for football fans. Losing a young, talented player like Sean Taylor is just beyond heartbreaking. Knowing that he leaves behind a young daughter who changed his life makes it even worse.

There's certainly more to this story. This wasn't a home robbery gone wrong. Hopefully the current investigation will yield some answers.
