SEC Thursday Night Fight

SEC Thursday Night Fight
Who is this Kentucky team? Tonight, football fans will get their answer. The 2007 Kentucky Wildcat season has been referred to as a fluke, a stroke of luck and dominance over opponents that have under-prepared for “decent” Wildcat squad. Others have considered Kentucky an underestimated, offensive threat that is capable of beating any opponent with any defensive weakness. They are a team that has yet to be beaten, and is yet to have an identity. What happens tonight? What happens in Columbia, S.C., when Steve Spurrier unleashes his one loss, 11th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks against the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats?

The undefeated Wildcats are comfortable with their current identity, but are still searching for that coveted SEC respect. Being ranked 8th nationally and rolling at 5-0 means little to nothing if they can't drop a big, blue hammer on the road in South Carolina. The Gamecocks only loss in 2007 has come at the hands of #1 LSU. Against every other opponent USC has found a way to win, even in close games. They look to be a real threat to Kentucky's dreams of capturing an SEC East Championship, and the fact remains that Steve Spurrier has never lost to Kentucky. Tonight he'll look to go 15-0.

Kentucky's key to victory is defense. Although they've proven they'll bend, they've yet to break – even against Arkansas and Heisman hopeful Darren McFadden. The offense has performed to near perfection in 2007, yet a less than stellar offensive outing could be just around the corner. Andre' Woodson has looked like Superman this season, flipping 16 TDs to 1 INT, but the defense simply can't expect such a potent output during every game.

The Bigger Picture

The race for the SEC East title hinges on this game. A Kentucky victory followed by a Florida loss to LSU would make the Wildcats the master of their own SEC destiny. However, if the Gamecocks can get the big win at home, they reopen the door in the SEC East for nearly everyone, excluding Vanderbilt – those lovable SEC losers. Tennessee and Florida will especially be leaning toward the Gamecock fan base tonight, in a hope that Spurrier and the boys can put the eastern side of the conference on a more level playing field.
