Shockey The Leader?

Glenn Minnis  |Aug 26,2007

Jeremy Shockey understands he's no Tiki Bartber, but the Giants all-pro tight end is convinced he can star as the team's best ever offensive player within their offense.

“I just feel like [Barber] was such a great leader, a great person, obviously you hate seeing someone like that leave, but it's life, he moved on, and this team is going to move on without him," Shockey said soon after the team opened camp."I think we're going to be successful without him. Some guys are going to have to step up and take that leadership role and take command of this offense. It's still early in camp."

But Shockey has already stepped forward to assume much of the responsibility.

"Every team I've been on I've considered myself a leader," said the now six-year veteran. "Even my first year I went to Miami (Fla., in college), I tried to be outspoken with the team. A leader is not something someone tries to make you into. It's something you're naturally born with."

And even given all his unconventional way--- flowing blond locks, tattoo-covered arms and all, Jeremy Shockey is convinced he can be that man for the Giants. If leading by on-field example counts for much of anything, perhaps he's on to something.
