Shark's Sunday MVPs (Week 12) Wow, the Patriots are human and beatable and a perfect season suddenly seems not so doable. The Eagles had their chances to knock Tom Brady and the Patriots out but failed to deliver that final crushing blow. Andy Reid and Jim Johnson did show the rest of the NFL how to play New England though. Their blue-print was working perfectly until the old, unpredictable, A.J. Feely came back. Week 12 is almost in the books and what a Sunday it was with more upsets and classic finishes across the board.
The Oakland Raiders stepped up on the road and beat the Kansas City Chiefs behind a gutsy game from Justin Fargas. Lane Kiffin coined Fargas the, "Crash Test Dummy" at USC for his plowing running style but now, this determined running back is due for a new nickname. Fargas helped control the clock with 22 rushes and 139 yards and a huge touchdown that was just enough for the Raiders to get the dub. The Cincinnati Bengals also surprised the upstart Tennessee Titans 35-6 behind phenominal efforts from Carson Palmer and wide receiver Chad Johnson. Ocho Cinco had his best game of the season with three touchdowns and for a minute, he was the best camera man on the field as well.
Here are the top six performances from Sunday's action and Shark's Sunday MVP.
1. Shark's Sunday MVP - Chad Johnson - The touchdown celebration machine, Chad Johnson did not disappoint Sunday. Johnson had not scored since week two but more than made up for that against the Titans. Johnson had three huge touchdowns to go along with 12 receptions and 103 yards. The CBS crew criticized the flamboyant Johnson for ducking behind their camera after his first score and the NFL will more than likely be throwing a huge fine at Chad. I found the celebration rather funny and had a big smile on my face. At the end of the day, this game is about having fun and not about penalizing everything that moves after a touchdown. Johnson's actions were not off the charts but really could have hurt the Bengals in the long-run if the Titans could have mustered any offense. It was sweet to see Johnson back in end zone, let's see what he'll have in store for us next week. 2. Devin Hester, Chicago Bears - Hester was a beast Sunday and was too much for the Denver Broncos' special teams unit. The only reason Hester is not my Sunday MVP is because Denver should not have been kicking to him in the first place. Mike Shanahan amazes me at times. His stubbornness and over confidence in his special teams unit cost his team the game. Chicago dropped an H-Bomb on Denver Sunday and stole the game from the Broncos 37-34. Hester had two returns for touchdowns. His first was a 75-yard punt return that should have told everyone on the Denver sideline, don't kick Hester the ball. Hester would then run a 55-yard kick off to the house that proved to be the back breaker for Denver. The H-Bomb may already be the best return may to ever play in the NFL. 3. Kolby Smith, Kansas City Chiefs - Rookie Kolby Smith got his first start and put up one memorable performance. Smith almost single handily propelled the Chiefs past Fargas and the Raiders rushing for 150 yards on 31 carries with two touchdowns. Smith's rushing touchdowns were the first rushing touchdowns from someone other than Larry Johnson since 2005. His 4.8 yards per rush set the tone for the Chiefs in the first half. 4. Dwight Smith, Minnesota Vikings - Smith had one of his best performance of his career Sunday as the Vikings beat up Eli Manning and the New York Giants. The Vikings upset the Giants behind three and a half tackles and two interceptions from Smith. Smith's second interception he took 93 yards to the house for a sweet, icing on the cake score. The Vikings ended up running back three of their four interceptions in the dismantling of Eli and the Giants. 5. Brett Farve, Green Bay Packers - The "Mississippi Gunslinger" had one of the best games of the year going 31-of-41 for a season high 381 yards and three touchdowns. Farve's poise and accuracy helped lead Packers past the Lions on Thanksgiving 37-26. Farve is putting up MVP numbers and should now be considered one of the front-runners in the MVP race, especially after Brady's earthly performance last night. Farve now has 3,356 yards passing and 22 touchdowns. 6. Frank Gore, San Francisco 49ers - Gore had his best game of the season, by far. Gore accounted for 214 total yards and helped control the clock late in the game for the 49ers as they stole a win from Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals. Gore had 21 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns but also added 11 receptions for 98 yards receiving. Without Gore's 200 plus total yards, the 49ers don’t even come close to wining the game. Honorable Mention
• Wes Welker, New England Patriots - Welker posted a career high 13 receptions for 149 yard game in the Pats come from behind victory over the Eagles. • Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals - "Fitzy" had nine catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns including a hail marry snag at the end of the first half. • Michael Boley, Atlanta Falcons - Boley had a monster game against Peyton Manning & Co. with nine tackles and three sacks. • Donald Driver, Green Bay Packers - Driver recorded his best game of the season with 10 catches for 147 yards in the Turkey Day victory over Detroit.
