Super Mario Leads Texans Over Broncos The Houston Texans defeated the Denver Broncos 31-13 in their first prime time game in two years. The Texans received a super performance from defensive end Mario Williams. The former number one overall pick had 3.5 sacks and tormented Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler all night. Williams has recorded a sack in a team record five straight games. He has 13 sacks this season. Only Seattle Seahawks defensive end Patrick Kerney has more (13.5). It was clear that Williams embraces the spotlight.
“This is our first big-stage game. Everybody was watching,” said Williams. “We were the only game on. We kind of showed the world what we can do.”
With the victory, the Texans improved to 7-7, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive. The Texans go on the road next week to take on the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts. Houston closes out the season hosting the playoff bound Jacksonville Jaguars.
At this time last year, pundits and fans were criticizing the Texans management for drafting Williams ahead of New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush and Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young.
You can’t really blame them. Bush had 88 receptions, nine touchdowns and over 1,500 total yards. He was a pivotal part of the Saints improbable run to the NFC Championship Game. Young was the offensive rookie of the year and landed on the cover of Madden.
As for Williams, his rookie campaign was slowed by a foot injury. He finished the year with 35 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Williams sophomore season got off to a great start with two sacks and a fumble return for a touchdown in the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. In less than two years, Williams has already established himself as the Texans all-time leader in sacks with 17.5. Williams’ stellar play this season will undoubtedly earn him a trip to the Pro Bowl.
