The Elimination Game

Not only do the Dallas Cowboys have home field advantage in the NFC, but they have the opportunity to paint the Wild-card picture in the final week of the 2007 NFL season. Is it important that they win vs. the Washington Redskins? More important that the "experts" on one particular "sports all the time" network are leading you to believe.

If the Washington Redskins beat Dallas in the final week of the season, not only will they clinch the final NFC playoff spot, but they'll put the Cowboys in a position of having to play them again in the second round of playoff action. Hold up, Sheldon. Are you saying you think the Redskins can beat the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle? Absolutely. No team in the NFC wants Washington to continue gaining momentum - they're running on an emotional high, and a belief that they can and will find a way to beat any opponent. If they get to the playoffs, they'll easily become the toughest opponent for any of the top 4 seeds.

Todd Collins is playing like the NFL veteran that he is, or isn't, considering the fact that he's thrown a handful of passes in his decade-plus-long career. The squad is starting to adjust to life after Sean Taylor, and through his death they've remembered why it's so important to play each game like it's the last. So...is it important that Cowboys put their best effort on the field this Sunday?

Resting T.O. is no-brainer. Although the guy is as tough as his hands are stone-hard, with a high ankle sprain he won't be touching a field until the Cowboys are back in the comfort of Texas Stadium. What about Tony Romo and his thumb? He played fine vs. Carolina on Saturday night, yes? The same reason he needs to play in D.C. on Sunday - or let the biggest Wild-card threat into the NFC playoff picture. Yes, yes, yes! If Dallas wants an easier road to the NFC Championship Game, doing everything in their power to knock Washington out of the playoffs should be a priority before enjoying a week off.

Washington wins and they're in. Washington loses, Minnesota loses and the Saints lose...the Skins are still in. Washington loses, Minnesota wins...the Vikings are in. Minnesota has a favorable matchup vs. the Denver Broncos - the Bronco run defense looking most similar to swiss cheese. If the season ends in an 8-8 tie between Washington, Minnesota and New Orleans...the Saints are in. So...who's it gonna be?
