Vick Plea Bargain Likely

Jim Derwin  |Aug 18,2007

As the clock ticks toward the Friday deadline given to embattled Falcons QB, Michael Vick, to agree to a plea bargain, more signs are pointing to Vick taking the government’s deal.  The two other defendants in the case have already plead guilty and are taking a deal, leaving Vick as the only defendant not to plead guilty.  At this point, it would be a very stupid decision to take the case to court where Vick could not only be looking at 5 years in prison, but an overall ban from the NFL.

First of all, with the other two defendants pleading guilty and the huge amount of evidence against Vick, he would most likely be found guilty anyway.  Plus if he does not accept the government’s deal, new charges will be added to his indictment.  These new charges are for illegally gambling on the dog fighting matches he has allegedly sponsored.  The NFL has a very strict gambling policy.  If Vick is found guilty of gambling charges, he can kiss his NFL career good bye.  But if Vick accepts this plea bargain, the gambling charges won’t be added and Vick would probably serve less than one year in prison and just miss the 2007-08 season.

For Atlanta Falcons fans, this is bitter sweet news.  The whole reason the Falcons hired Bobby Petrino was because they were confident he was the guy to make the most of Michael Vick’s extraordinary talents.  Getting Vick playing up to his potential and improving upon one of his best statistical seasons was building a nice buzz in Atlanta.  Now Petrino will be focusing his offensive genius on Joey Harrington.  But if the Falcons fans had to choose between being without Vick for one season, or forever, I’d say the choice is obvious.
