Vick vs. Lewis
The Michael Vick dog fighting case has gained international attention and outcry.  Once again, we are subjected to a high profile, African-American athlete being charged with a horrible crime.  Just last season it seemed every week we read about another player (usually a Bengal) being arrested for off the field misconduct.  Some were arguably minor crimes like DUIs, and some more major, like Pacman Jones' alleged shooting.  But think about this.  Has any incident involving an NFL player stirred up this much uproar than this latest one involving Atlanta Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick?  (Being that OJ was retired, I'm excluding him in this argument)

What about Baltimore Ravens' all-pro linebacker, Ray Lewis?  After Super Bowl XXXIV, Lewis was charged with the murder of Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar following a fight in a nightclub in Atlanta's Buckhead district.  Here we have a player accused of being involved in the deaths of two young men, yet Lewis didn’t receive half the condemnation that Michael Vick is going through.  Lewis was fined $250,000 by the NFL, but he wasn't suspended one day, and actually led the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory the following season.  He was even chosen to grace the cover of Madden 2005, and has endorsed many products.

Vick is being charged with his involvement in a dog fighting ring.  He knew about the fights, let them happen, and probably placed a few bets.  Now it’s very likely he could miss the entire 2007-08 season, lose endorsements, and be sent to federal prison.  There are even petitions to get Vick kicked out of the NFL.  Even if Vick is vindicated of these charges, his image and reputation are ruined forever.  What is the reasoning behind that?  I love our four legged friends as much as anyone, but have we gotten to the point in this country where we value the life of a pit bull more than a human?  Sure, there was never any evidence that proved Ray Lewis was responsible for those deaths, but he was there, and he lied to the police during the investigation.  I just don't understand how Lewis gets a "do over," and Vick gets the "screw over."

  2. I think some how they making example of Vicks situation for animal rights. What about human rights? How about dead people rights??? He made a stupid mistake. Everyday millions of people place bets on things some don't even know such bettign exist. So what? Yeah killing dogs is not a nice thing, killing humans is not a nice thing either. His fault, he couldn't find any friend to cover up for him like others do, thats it. Only thing get my nerves here though people saying "ooo this happened because he is black?!?" Come on. Now you people saying that if he was white, asian, hispanic or arabic this wasn't going to happen? What was going to happen them. Pad them on the shoulder and say "good boy, did you win?"

  4. Ok, yes there have been a lot of NFL players det involved in some things that they should cause them to be suspended. If you look at the Lewis case though he went to court and fought that and he won, however, vick pled guilty and then told of every little detail that he was involved in. I think it was horrible, but I also think when it is something new we rush to make an example out of someone. I do not disagree with him being suspended though, I have a young son who plays football and I am sick of NFL players not setting the example they should. I know they do not asked to be role models, but they should understand there is a certain amount of responsibility that comes with the fame. I feel like the NFL players need to realize they are not above the law byt society needs to stop trying to be so much tougher on them because they are famous. We all need to calm down and follow the same set of rules regardless of out income or our status in society!
