The Minnesota Vikings signed DT Fred Evans to bolster their depth on the defensive line. While Pat Williams and Kevin Williams are Pro Bowl caliber players, Pat Williams is no spring chicken and Evans does infuse youthful energy there. There were some questions about Evans’ character seeing as though he was arrested twice this year. Fred Evans was arrested earlier for marijuana possession and more recently in June for assaulting a Miami Police officer. The Vikings were supposed to be on a big character kick since Brad Childress took over for Mike Tice, who was their coach during the infamous “Love Boat” scandal. We all remember how bad that made the Vikings look. Well, maybe some people thought it looked bad. I think it’s pretty funny. Childress, and former director of pro scouting in Miami, George Paton, researched Evans thoroughly and remain convinced that he will be a good fit in their system and in the locker room. I’m not going to question the Vikings’ reasoning for signing Evans. They needed depth at the DT spot, and that’s exactly what Fred Evans will give them. As the season progresses, I wouldn’t be surprised to see his playing time increase because he does have a lot of talent.
