A-League wrap: Del Piero fires big Sydney win
Italian star Alessandro Del Piero scored four goals as Sydney FC humiliated Wellington Phoenix 7-1 in the A-League on Saturday.
Joel Griffiths also scored on his debut for Sydney, who made the most of a Phoenix side low on confidence and slipshod in defence.
Del Piero enjoyed the space that was afforded to him, completing his hat-trick before half-time, while Jason Culina and substitute Yairo Yau also found the net for Sydney.
Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund netted a late consolation goal for the lowly visitors, who remain stranded on the bottom of the ladder with their fourth consecutive loss.
Del Piero, who now has nine goals for the season, was substituted eight minutes from time to a standing ovation from the home fans.
Elsewhere, leaders Central Coast Mariners extended their advantage on top of the ladder with a 0-0 draw against the Newcastle Jets in Gosford.
The result sees the Mariners move to 35 points, three clear of Adelaide United, while the Jets leapfrogged Sydney FC back into the top six.
And third-placed Melbourne Victory maintained the pressure on the top two with a 1-0 win over 10-man Perth Glory.
Perth defender Scott Jamieson's 24th-minute own goal proved the difference as Victory clinched just their third win in 12 attempts in Perth.
Perth finished a man down after Josh Risdon saw red for what the referee deemed to be a bad tackle in the 68th minute.
