A-League wrap: Ono magic fires Western Sydney
Jan 01, 2013 5:19 PM GMT
Two sublime goals from A-League star Shinji Ono has inspired Western Sydney Wanderers to a thrilling 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory.
Ono's two moments of magic came either side of a Spase Dilevski goal to make it a perfect start to 2013 for the A-League's new boys as they leap-frogged Victory into third spot on the ladder.
After Ono gave the home side a deserved lead at the break with a brilliant volley, Victory looked like they would escape with a point when Dilevski equalised 18 minutes from time.
But Ono was to have the final say seven minutes later, curling in a pin-point right foot shot from outside the box past the outstretched hand of Nathan Coe and into the corner of the net.
It was just reward for the home side, who dominated for long periods and created the best chances of a pulsating contest.
Earlier, Melbourne Heart snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park.
Golgol Mebrahtu continued his emergence as a future star with Heart's first goal, while goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne made his debut for the home team, producing some fine saves in their first win since their 1-0 win over Perth Glory in Round 10.
Heart took an early lead when Mebrahtu slotted the ball through Mark Birighitti's legs to score his third goal in five A-League games.
A penalty to each team saw Heart lead 2-1 at half-time and Heart held on after the break to take the three points.
And in the late kick-off, Brisbane Roar got past Wellington Phoenix 2-1 at Suncorp Stadium, with both sides having a man sent off in the second half.
Besart Berisha and Ben Halloran were both on target for Mike Mulvey's men, while Jeremy Brockie struck a superb long-range effort for the Phoenix.
