Absa premiership preview: Platinum Stars vs Supersport United
Supersport United will be hoping to turn the tables around regarding their recent poor form they displayed when they played Platinum Stars last season. Matsatsantsa A Pitori will travel to Rustenburg on Sunday afternoon while they are riding high and find themselves occupying the first spot on the log with 15 points after eight rounds of fixtures.
This Sunday they will contest in the same ground they were thrashed 3-0 last season by 2012/2013 Premiership runner-up Platinum Stars. The humiliation away at Platinum Stars was followed by the first round meeting of another 1-0 defeat by Dikwena in Pretoria, which meant Stars registered all six points over United last season.
Dikwena were on fire last season and they started this season with an unfamiliar performance despite having a great run in the cup competitions after winning the MTN8 Cup in September and they are currently in contention of lifting another trophy as they are in the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout Cup.
Supersport United are also in the same stage of the same cup but their target for now will be to try and emulate what Stars have done to them in the last campaign when the two sides meet this weekend in what promises to be an exciting encounter. Dikwena want to return back to the top five of the table after their poor league form in the start of the season see them placed eighth on the standings and five points adrift of their opponents with 10 points.
The odds will favour the home side on Sunday but the current Supersport United is mostly different to the one that Stars played last season after the new manager at United Cavin Johnson, who guided Dikwena to the second place last season, made quality signings of no fewer than five in the winter. While Allen Frees’ men play with an almost unchanged squad that finished second on the log last season as they believe in ‘why fix it while it’s not broken.’
Out of those, more than five quality signings that were by Matsatsantsa, two of those players in Innocent Mkhabela and Thuso Phala were part of impressive Dikwena squad last term. If Stars see off United this time around, then Platinum Stars will have surely set the bragging rights.
