Absa Prtemiership: Chiefs, Sundowns meet in top of the table clash
Kaizer Chiefs will lock horns against Mamelodi Sundowns in the top-of-the-table clash on Thursday night at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, kickoff at 19:30.
The two sides were supposed to meet in the Absa Premiership encounter last December but due to the passing on of former state man Nelson Mandela, the match was postponed. Amakhosi will head to Loftus Stadium leading the standings with 30 points from 14 matches while the Brazilians are second on the log with 25 points from 13 matches.
Kaizer Chiefs fullback Tshepo Masilela, says his side should be aware of Mamelodi Sundowns threat as they will be playing Pitso Mosimane’s men away from home. “The game against Sundowns on Thursday will no doubt be a cracker of a game,” he told the club official website (www.kaizerchiefs.com)
“I worked with Pitso Mosimane (Sundowns coach) in Bafana Bafana and I know he is good coach, and playing Sundowns away will give them confidence ahead of the match. I think this is going to be the best game for the supporters,” added the former Getafe CF left-back.
The last time Kaizer Chiefs came away with a victory at Loftus stadium was back in 2011 December under the guidance of Vladimir Vermezovic, after then, Chiefs visited the Pretoria capital city twice, losing 4-1 in a cup tie in 2012 before drawing 0-0 early in 2013 in a league match.
Mamelodi Sundowns have injury concerns going into the encounter as centre-back pair Alje Schut and Rashid Sumaila might not feature on Thursday while attackers Bongani Zungu, Cathbert Malajila and Surprise Moriri are set for late fitness test.
The good news for the Brazilians will be the return of their players from Bafana Bafana which is Tebogo Langerman, Hlompho Kekana, Bryce Moon and Katlego Mashego. All players returned for national duty with no injuries and they will be ready for selection.
Kaizer Chiefs international players also reported for training with the rest of the squad on Tuesday ahead of the crucial tie with Sipihiwe Tshabalala and Tefo Mashamaite healthy while captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is doubtful after not featuring in the last game of Bafana Bafana against Nigeria last Sunday.
