Andrea Pirlo was born in Flero, Italy on 19 May 1979. Playing as a deep-lying central midfielder, he is considered one of the pioneers of the modern 'regista' role. Pirlo is known for his passing, technique, vision and set piece skills, as well as his ability to find space in midfield and orchestrate play for both club and country. As a result, he has been nicknamed 'l'architetto', which translates to 'the architect'.

A product of Brescia's youth academy, Pirlo graduated and played for the senior side from 1995 until 1998, at which point he joined Internazionale. His time with the club was ultimately unsuccessful, as he failed to establish himself in the first team and spent significant time out on loan to Reggina and his former club, Brescia.
