Beckham announces his retirement
May 16, 2013 4:27 PM GMT
David Beckham has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.
The 38-year-old former England captain moved to Paris Saint-Germain in January on a short-term deal but has made just one start for the French champions.
Beckham said in a statement announcing his decision: "I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level."
The news comes in the same week PSG celebrated claiming their first Lique 1 title in 19 years, in a season in which they also reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
The midfielder's only start came in the first leg of the last-eight clash against Barcelona at the Parc des Princes.
Beckham's career began at Manchester United and has also included spells at Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and Milan.
