Belgian First Division: Sporting Charleroi 0 Zulte-Waregem 1
Mar 04, 2013 8:10 AM GMT
A stunning late winner from Mbaye Leye has extended Zulte-Waregem's unbeaten league run to 17 games as they defeated Sporting Charleroi 1-0.
Charleroi, who sit 12th in the Belgian First Division, looked on track to hold their high-flying visitors to a draw on Sunday as the match remained locked at 0-0 heading into second-half stoppage time.
But Leye, who had not played since February 16, marked his return to Waregem's starting line-up with a brilliant volley to claim all three points in Charleroi and keeping the pressure on league leaders Anderlecht.
Despite the 27-point gap separating the two teams before Sunday's match, Charleroi actually had the better chances to win with Ederson, Francis N'Ganga and David Pollet all failing to convert their opportunities.
But with almost the last kick of the game, Thorgan Hazard's corner fell to Leye on the edge of the penalty area and the Senegalese striker smashed it through a crowd of players and into the net, posting his ninth goal of the season.
Waregem have not lost in the league since October 21, winning 12 of their past 17 fixtures, and having defeated Anderlecht during the week, they now trail the Brussels-based club by only three points at the top of the Belgian First Division.
