Espanyol had to come from 2-0 and then 3-2 down to snatch a share of the points at the Estadi Cornella El Prat against Athletic Bilbao.
And visiting coach Marcelo Bielsa said afterwards that he did not have a settled defensive structure in place.
"We didn't defend well," Bielsa conceded. "There were individual and collective mistakes that brought defensive mistakes.
"And I think that's because of my decisions, which I think are very important. I have not yet given to my team a solid and stable defence and it doesn't help."
Bielsa's side have so far failed to replicate their impressive form from last season, winning just one of their four La Liga games this term.
