Brazil Serie A Wrap: Mineiro struggles continue
By Football News
Atletico Mineiro's slow start to the Brazil Serie A seasons has continued with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Santos.
They have now managed just four points from their opening five games leaving them dangerously placed in the relegation zone.
Santos got off to a flying start on Wednesday when Cicero unleashed a swerving rocket from distance to put them in the lead after just four minutes.
Mineiro goalkeeper Victor managed to get his hands to the shot but was unable to prevent it from flying in to the back of the net.
It looked as if Atletico had equalised just before half-time but the goal was correctly disallowed for offside.
The visitors' hopes of an equaliser were all but extinguished when Marcos Rocha was given his marching orders after he brought down Leo Cittadini who was through on goal in the 79th minute.
In other results, Portuguesa left it until the 83rd minute to score the winner against Fluminese.
The loss was a blow for Fluminese who could have pushed into the automatic Copa Libertadores spots with a win or draw.
Gremio snatched a point at home to Sao Paulo thanks to Kleber's 87th minute goal which cancelled out Luis Fabiano's strike just before half-time.
The draw means that Sao Paulo are now winless from their past three games, a trend they will hope to correct in their next match against Santos after the break.
