Brazil Serie A Wrap: Nautico grab rare point
Sep 26, 2013 4:50 PM GMT
Nautico caused a surprise result as they held Santos 1-1 on the road in the Brazilian Serie A on Wednesday.
Rooted to the bottom of the table and 16 points from safety, Nautico looked like causing a massive upset when Maikon Leite opened the scoring on 83 minutes.
The striker was fed a wonderful ball by Derley and after a quality first-touch, planted the ball past Santos goalkeeper Aranha.
But as Nautico were still celebrating their lead, Santos were awarded a free-kick in the 85th minute in a dangerous position after Everton Costa appeared to go down easy when he made contact with the defender.
Santos' Cicero curled his free kick beautifully over the wall and into the corner to deny Nautico what would have been a famous victory.
The draw means Santos move up to sixth, six points adrift of the last continental qualification position but 17 points behind league leaders Cruzeiro.
In the other game on Wednesday, a goal each just before half-time saw Criciuma draw 1-1 against Atletico Mineiro.
Luan headed Atletico Mineiro into the lead after timing his run to perfection and connecting with Junior Cesar's cross in the 42nd minute.
But only a minute later, Criciuma were level as Lins bicycle-kicked a looping ball from close-range into the net.
Criciuma remain in 17th position, two points from safety, while Atletico Mineiro are now placed eighth.
