Oct 22, 2012 2:52 AM GMT
A powerful header from Leonardo Silva has earned Atletico Mineiro a 3-2 win in the top-of-the-table clash over Fluminense in Brazil's Serie A.
Mineiro headed into Sunday's match at home nine points behind leaders Fluminense but breathed some more life into their title bid with Silva's late winner.
Ronaldinho put the ball in the back of the net for Mineiro in the first half, curling a free-kick around the wall but the goal was disallowed for a foul by the home team.
After a scoreless first half, Wellington Nem put Fluminense in front in the 56th minute after running onto Fred's clever pass on the edge of the area.
Jo brought the home side back level in the 69th minute when Ronaldinho made a strong run through the middle of the park before setting up the 25-year-old striker who thumped the ball into the top corner with his left foot.
In the 82nd minute, Mineiro were in front when Jo got free at the back post to head Bernard's cross into the net but Fluminense looked to have salvaged a draw thanks to Fred's smart finish.
But Mineiro took all three points when Silva burst into the box and lept high to meet Ronaldinho's angled pass, heading the ball powerfully into the net.
Mineiro have moved to 63 points with six games to go, while Fluminense remain top of the table with 69.
Ponte Preta stunned Santos with a 1-0 win thanks to Luan's 13th-minute goal, while Flamengo upset fifth-placed Sao Paulo with the same scoreline, as Marcos Gonzalez scored the winner.
In other results, Nautico and Portuguesa played out a 0-0 draw, while Sport Recife claimed a 1-0 win away to Atletico GO.
