Chelsea pursue Porto midfielder
Reigning Premier League champions Chelsea are preparing to break the bank in order to recapture the form they showed last season, with promising Porto defensive midfielder Ruben Neves being one of Jose Mourinho's top targets, according to London Evening Standard.
Neves, 18, proved influential to Porto in their triumphant victory over Mourinho's men in midweek and, with current midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic yet to impress this season, the Portuguese boss feels that the prodigy, who has also been scouted by Real Madrid and Barcelona, could be the key to reigniting Chelsea's title hopes.
The Portugal U21 international has a £29m release clause in his contract, which could be the one sticking point in any deal that would see him move to Stamford Bridge.
Neves remains behind Juventus showstopper Paul Pogba on Mourinho's wishlist and is the cheaper option for the 52-year-old manager but Chelsea must decide whether they want to spend such a large amount of money on a player who made his professional debut less than 12 months ago.
